Listen in: What Are Men Longing For?
The state of men in our culture is worse than ever in terms of loneliness, shame, and “purpose void”. How did we get here? And why do so many men avoid church?
In the last episode of our summer series, What Are You Longing For?, our own Shay Roush sits down with Kermit Summerall, both pastors of Crossing Men, to discuss what men are longing for: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
In this enlightening conversation, Shay and Kermit explain how many men feel trapped and defeated by the demands and pressures of life and are tempted to check out from reality and stop showing up where they’re needed most. But the reality is that men are not only longing for purpose, they also crave relationships built on honesty and trust.
The good news is that men are starting to come out of isolation and build authentic relationships. When given the chance, they enjoy being shoulder-to-shoulder with other men, working side by side towards a common mission. They find purpose when they are able to use their strengths to serve others and show up in their families and communities.
The bad news is that in response to the cultural outcry against “toxic masculinity”, many men feel a sense of hopelessness, and that society is against them. The temptation is to stop showing up and shrink back from responsibilities. But God has created men with gifts and even the gift of masculinity can make a difference in this world, and this provides a unique opportunity for the church to encourage men to show up and use their strengths for a purpose.
As men step out of isolation into authentic relationships, transformation takes place. Instead of feeling hopeless and alone, there is a sense of community, accomplishment, and growth. They become better husbands, fathers, professionals, and servant-leaders.
Studies show that Christian men who are actively involved in church are the best husbands, the best fathers, and experience the highest levels of happiness. This hopeful message from Shay and Kermit is that more than ever, men are recognizing that the “lone ranger” model doesn’t work. Men are beginning to understand that they need each other, and that they are needed in all areas of life and society.
As a man, your presence can make a powerful difference in the life of your family, church, and community! This episode will challenge and encourage you as you hear about the powerful ways God is moving in the hearts and minds of Christian men as they follow Jesus together.
